We Need to Talk

BREAK-UP ARTIFACT EXHIBITION

Opening Reception: Friday, February 10, 5-8 p.m.
Exhibition on View: February 10-18; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Crosstown Arts Gallery
422 N. Cleveland Street, Memphis, TN 38104

Sometimes, love ends. Romantic relationships, familial relationships, relationships with places, our former selves, or even really, really great pieces of pizza — they all have to end. These relationships tend to be hard to let go of. Be they genial, terrible, or downright awful, most people have an object, memento, or souvenir of each broken relationship that, because of it’s meaning, they just can’t throw away. These mundane objects are transformed into totems of memory, becoming the holy tangibles of a relationship ceased.

This exhibition focuses on those objects and their stories and aims to offer one final bit of catharsis. Or at least a final chance to say … “Boy, Bye!!!” Instead of burning the coat from that jerk who told you “It’s not you, it’s me,” exhibit it here! Bring out of the woodwork that shrine to Harold Pandinsky you’ve had in the back of your closet since sixth grade.

The Break-Up Show 6

LIVE SKETCH SHOW

The Break-Up Show is back with the sixth installment of true stories of heartbreak, rejection and insanity, transforming the indignities of bad dates and break-up drama into the sort of comedy that may make you feel like it was worth the pain. Original sketch comedy videos, dramatic recitations of text-message breakups, onstage bad date reenactments, and hysterical meltdowns are simply par for the course. The stories, while totally anonymous, are 100% true and nearly all submitted by Memphians.

“The level of quality and crazy in every year’s submissions is truly impressive,” said Savannah Bearden, director of The Break-Up Show. “As performers, we are lucky to have gained such a dedicated following of folks who trust us with their dirtiest, most embarrassing laundry. I think it’s our funniest year yet.”

This year, the troupe is heading to the New Daisy Theater on Beale Street, after being featured in an art show centered around break-ups at Crosstown Arts in Midtown.

“Right now, there is no other comedy show like this in Memphis,” said Bearden. “The multilocation and multimedia aspects of our production are really unique and I believe that’s why we get such strong audience reaction. We hope that this year is no exception.”

Submissions for the 2017 show are still being accepted at breakupshow.com until the end of January. Typical submissions include online dating messages or encounters, text message screenshots, and break-up emails. All are encouraged to submit their experiences to be featured in the show. The Break-Up Show 6 is one night only at the New Daisy Theater on Beale Street. Tickets are $20, with VIP packages TBA. For more information, go to breakupshow.com.
