Funding Cuts Have Begun—and It Already Cost Seven Families Their Home. Help us Keep Them Housed!
For seven families, last week was nightmare. Last Friday, seven individuals and families living with HIV/AIDS were scheduled to be housed by Friends For Life. Through our Tenant-Based Rental Assistance (TBRA) program—and after a very long wait on a housing list—they were about to find a permanent place to call home.
Moments before they were to be introduced to their new homes, our funding was cut. On Thursday, our funders from HOPWA (Housing Opportunities for People Living With AIDS) informed us that due to federal budget cuts to their program (the first of many), all seven families would be denied housing. This was just a few hours before they were scheduled to move. They were full of hope. They were packed and ready. And suddenly their housing was gone.
Our staff was heartbroken. Together we decided this just wasn’t right. We agreed to do the right thing … to house them anyway … and to make sure that no one should go without a home, especially just hours before they were promised it.
So we stepped up and agreed to move them in—and turn to our supporters for help to provide the $44,000 needed to house these families. Even as more funding cuts are expected, we knew it was the right thing to do.
