Pride Journeys: Easy Day Trips from Memphis

by Joey Amato

For this Discovery issue, we take a short drive beyond Memphis to uncover destinations that feel both accessible and unexpected. Each of these cities offers a distinct sense of place, with LGBTQ+ experiences woven naturally into their culture, neighborhoods, and everyday moments. These are trips that can be planned with ease but remembered for much longer.

Athens, Georgia

A few hours from Memphis, Athens blends college-town energy with a creative spirit that feels immediate. Anchored by the presence of the University of Georgia, the city moves at a rhythm shaped by music, art, and independent thought.

Downtown streets are lined with record stores, local restaurants, and intimate venues where live music spills out into the night. Athens has long held a reputation as a place where individuality is not just accepted but expected. That carries into its LGBTQ+ community, where inclusive spaces and events feel like a natural extension of the city’s identity.

The experience here is less about checking off landmarks and more about settling into the flow of the city. A walk through downtown can turn into a full evening, moving from dinner to drinks to live music without ever needing a plan.

Louisville, Kentucky

Louisville offers a different kind of Southern charm, one that mixes tradition with a growing sense of inclusivity. Known for the Kentucky Derby, the city also reveals itself through its neighborhoods, each with its own character and pace.

The Highlands stands out as a hub for LGBTQ+ life, with bars, cafes, and local shops creating a welcoming and social environment. There is a sense of ease here, where conversations start quickly and the atmosphere invites you to stay awhile. Beyond nightlife, Louisville’s culinary scene continues to gain attention, offering everything from casual bites to refined dining experiences.

There is also a strong cultural thread running through the city, from museums to waterfront spaces along the Ohio River. It is a place that balances energy with comfort, making it an easy and rewarding road trip.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Oklahoma City unfolds quietly, revealing its character through neighborhoods, conversation, and community. It is not a place that demands attention, but one that rewards curiosity.

The heart of its LGBTQ+ scene can be found along 39th Street, often referred to as the Gayborhood. Here, spaces like Angles and The Boom offer high-energy nights filled with music, drag, and shared experience. Nearby, Tramps provides a more relaxed setting, while Frankie’s OKC brings an inclusive, community-driven feel to the mix.

Beyond nightlife, districts like the Paseo Arts District and the Plaza District highlight the city’s creative side. Murals, galleries, and independent shops create spaces where identity and expression are explored openly. Stops like Bad Granny’s Bazaar add a sense of discovery, offering vintage finds and local character.

What stands out most is how naturally LGBTQ+ spaces exist within the city. They are not isolated or hidden. They are part of the rhythm of everyday life, found in conversation, art, and shared experience.
