Shifting and Shaping Outreach –
Speaker Dr. Aima Ahonkhai, Associate Physician in Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital
Worked with barbers and stylists in Memphis and Nashville, normalizing discussion with prevention.
Fact: People see their barbers and stylists more often than their doctors.
Fact: Black MSM avoid typical healthcare systems.
Fact: Barbers and stylists are trusted
Cutting Out Stigma (COS) Intervention Schematic – 6 mo Pilot intervention Conversations with barbers/stylists + Multimedia social media = Stop Stigma campaign. “Say it with your chest.”
Outcomes;
- Recruited and trained 67 barbers
- 50 barbers participated
- COS was feasible & acceptable to barbers
- Significant increase in barbers’ HIV and PrEP knowledge
- Barbers reached 4400 clients
- The social media campaign reached 25,000 people online

Routine HIV Testing in ER – Shauni Williams, FOCUS Initiative, Gilead Sciences
The FOCUS Initiative is a public health program by Gilead Sciences that aims to improve early detection and linkage to care for blood-borne viruses like HIV, hepatitis C (HCV), and hepatitis B (HBV).
FOCUS program Impact to date 12.7 Mil HIV Tests, 9.5 Million HCV tests
Leveraging Opt-Out Testing for screening for a “one-test, three paths” approach for HIV, HCV, HBV, and STIs.
Why does Opt-Out Testing in the ER present improved outcomes with HIV and STI diagnosis?
1 in 3 people with HIV have had the virus for at least 3 years.
1 in 4 people with HIV have had the virus for at least 7 years
1 in 5 people with HIV opt out of care.
