OUTMemphis Commemorates 2017 Transgender Awareness Week and
Transgender Day of Remembrance
Memphis, TN, November, 7, 2017: The observance of Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) will be held November 14-20 hosted by OUTMemphis. Transgender Day of Remembrance honors transgender and gender nonconforming (GNC) individuals discriminated against and murdered due to anti-transgender violence.
Our schedule of events facilitates fellowship among Trans/GNC people, and it engages the community to become more aware of Trans issues, particularly anti-trans violence. A highlight of the schedule is the screening of a controversial documentary at the National Civil Rights Museum on November 17, 2017 at 6:30 pm. This is a free event, but space is limited so tickets must be reserved on the Civil Rights Museum Website or OUTMemphis.org. We also have a live art presentation and auction on Saturday, November 18, 12:00-6:00 pm at First Congo 1000 South Cooper St with the proceeds benefiting Trans Services at OUTMemphis. The Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil held at OUTMemphis at 5:30 pm will be the climax of this series of events during transgender awareness week.
The Day of Remembrance was first held in 1999 as a way to draw attention to the issue of anti-transgender violence. The event was initially created to mark the one-year anniversary of the death of a Massachusetts transgender woman, Rita Hester, whose death remains unsolved. The local event will commemorate the lives of those Trans individuals lost during the last year. Currently that number is 26 confirmed murders.
