On April 15, the Williamson County Democratic Party’s Diversity Committee is sponsoring a Diversity Day Celebration at Pinkerton Park in Franklin, offering an opportunity for citizens to gather and celebrate their diversity.
Robert McNamara, chairperson for the diversity committee for Williamson County Democratic Party, said they felt like it was important to provide an open atmosphere for candidates and citizens to gather.
There will be more than just food and fellowship, however. The Major Minors youth choir will perform, there will be a Native American dance performance, and a mingling activity to encourage people to get to know each other. Candidates are welcome to attend, and although they won’t be giving speeches, citizens will have the opportunity to make conversation with them.
Williamson County Democratic Party’s Diversity Committee has a mission statement to spread the message that all people are created equal and that the Democratic Party will fight to end discrimination based on race, ethnicity, national origin, language, religion, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability.
In its first year, McNamara said he hoped Diversity Day Celebration would become an annual event.
“It’s our inaugural event, so we want to keep it simple this year, but let it grow from there,” he said.
