In today’s world, young people face an array of challenges that significantly impact their mental health. From navigating identity and self-expression to handling academic pressures and social expectations, the stressors can feel overwhelming. For LGBTQ+ youth, these challenges are often compounded by discrimination, family rejection, and a lack of affirming support systems. As rates of anxiety, depression, and suicide rise, it is crucial to provide accessible mental health resources and foster environments that support youth wellness.
The Importance of Mental Health for Young People
Mental health is just as vital as physical health, yet it often goes unaddressed until crises arise. The Trevor Project’s 2024 National Survey on LGBTQ+ Youth Mental Health found that 39% of LGBTQ+ young people seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, with even higher rates (46%) among transgender and nonbinary youth. A staggering 50% of LGBTQ+ young people who wanted mental health care in the past year were not able to get it.
Factors such as affirming communities, mental health support, and access to therapy dramatically reduce these risks. When young people have spaces to express themselves safely and receive guidance from trusted adults, their resilience and ability to navigate challenges improve significantly.
