It’s no secret that Memphis is a proud city known for its musical history. Just visit Beale Street on a Friday night and you can see, hear and even feel the musical history and soul of Memphis. Combine that musical soul with the Grit and Grind of the Grizzles and you have the Memphis Grizzline, the official drumline for the Memphis Grizzlies. And this year, the Grizzline helped bring a true Memphis beat to the Focus Awards.

With original music, choreographed movements, synchronized marching, dancing and drumstick flips the Grizzline helps get the crowd hyped for Grizzlies games. The Grizzline was started in 2006 by Adam Clay, who at the time was a part of the University of Memphis drumline. Since then, the Grizzline has grown to over 30 members and has started performing at all types of events. From Redbird games, school gatherings to AutoZone store openings, the Grizzline is getting all of Memphis pumped for any kind of event.
While knowing how to drum is a huge part of being in the Grizzline, it is not the only thing. Members must have energy, and lots of it. The music and drums are great, but the dancing, rhythm and excitement from the performers are what give that extra touch and make the crowd want to cheer and dance along. The director, Zeke David works with the show designer/ manager Patrick McNicholas to prepare for the performances. On special occasions they have used trash cans, buckets and even brooms during performances.
With all the excitement the Grizzline brings wherever they perform, we were delighted to have them perform outside of the Zebra lounge and Ballet Memphis before the Focus Awards show. Their spirit and great music helped get everyone attending, and even those near-by, excited and ready for a fun night.
