Her music and unique voice permeate your soul. If ever there was a true love affair, Sinclair and her music is it.
As she walked into Zollie’s Koffee for the interview, her personality resonated as deeply as the uniqueness of the church pews on which we were sitting. After a few introductions and a photo shoot, Sinclair started off the interview answering one of the most profound questions an artist can be asked, “Did you ever imagine you would be where you are today?”
“Growing up I had dreams for sure, but I never imagined it being so close to my future. Honestly, where I am today has its ups and downs, but to be completely honest, it’s kinda like a dream. ’Cause I never thought that I would be married to a woman. I never thought I’d be able to make music about it — find hope in that inspiration. You know the downside to it is my family responded the way I did imagine. We’re not close, but I have a family now that I never would’ve imagined.”
Sinclair grew up in a strict evangelical home in upstate New York. She was the sixth of nine siblings and turned to music at a very young age, learning to play classical guitar. Music was her escape then, but it turned out to be so much more.
After coming out to her family at 20 years old, Sinclair moved to New York City and then LA. Her move to Nashville came in 2011 for one of her first songwriting experiences with Marie Osmond. She’s also written songs with Kevin Griffin, lead singer of Better Than Ezra and LA artist, Krysta Youngs. From quasi-country to indie rock, Sinclair holds her own in Music City.
Sinclair, now 27, just finished a major city tour that included London, Berlin and NYC. Her wife of three years, Natalie Rose, traveled with her.
Natalie is an artist herself and commissioned her first piece, a mural for a hospital in her hometown of Redding, California, at 17 years old.
“Married life is amazing. We ended up getting married a year before the federal decision was made. I thought we can’t wait. I can’t be with her every waking minute and have her go into a diabetic coma or wait for her mother to fly in from Austin,” Sinclair said about marriage. The couple married in San Francisco and had their wedding celebration at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville.
Earlier this year, both women were featured in Go Mag’s 100 Women We Love: Class of 2017.
“It was really, really an honor,” said Sinclair. “It was a great list. I had a lot of fun reading about all of these badass chicks.”
Sinclair’s Sweet Talk
Sinclair released her debut EP, Sweet Talk, in 2014.
Sweet Talk, with its Indie Rock sounds, takes you through a range of emotions and allows fans to hear Sinclair coming into her own.
Her single “This Too Shall Pass,” has been streamed more than 11 million times on Spotify and was chosen for Spotify’s Coffee House Playlist.
“You know what’s wild?” she said when asked if she thought “This Too Shall Pass” would become her top streamed song. “I never imagined that would be the song and it’s really cool that it was. Out of all the songs on that Sweet Talk EP, that was the most vulnerable song I had written. It was the most honest.”
The song chronicled her battles with depression, she said.
“It was a retrospect of about a year of my life when I was living at home. I was contemplating suicide. I couldn’t see a future. I was in a spot where I couldn’t fathom life without my family. I also couldn’t fathom not expressing myself and loving who I needed to love,” she said.
“That song is ultimately about the fact that two years later,” she continued, “I was living the life I couldn’t have possibly imagined. That song is really about that whole idea; you don’t know what next year looks like. There is always reason to hope.”
Her follow-up EP, CLBLND, was released in 2016 via TeenVogue.com.
Sinclair took the sounds on this EP a totally different direction providing a mix of digital and pop synth; a changed Sinclair with a changed style.
The EP is all Sinclair. She wrote the music, performed and produced it. The music from this EP afforded her opportunities to tour with artists Ke$ha, Claude Kelly & Chuck Harmony (Louis York), Max Frost and Mike Posner.
As for the future, Sinclair is gearing up to release a new EP this fall.
“I’m stoked to start releasing music to the people who have been faithful to listening and the people who are starting to find me,” she said. “The bottom line is, I create all the time. I have so much music I’m dying to get out of my system.”
