April 3rd will be one year since the arrest of Manuel Duran while doing his job as a journalist, covering a peaceful demonstration in Memphis, TN. Duran was negligently arrested by the Memphis Police Department on April 3rd while he was covering an action at 201 Poplar that attempted to bring awareness about the abuses of the for-profit prison industry. Although the charges against him were dropped, the Shelby Co. Sheriff’s office decided to hold him for two days after his bond had been paid in full and voluntarily hand the journalist to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) at the jail when he was released. Comunidades Unidas en Una Voz is holding a vigil at El Mercadito in Memphis to remember a year of the arrest of Manuel Duran and demand the immediate release from ICE custody.
