TENNESSEE EQUALITY PROJECT (TEP)
TEP engages state and local governments in Tennessee on behalf of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community to fight negative legislation at the state level. In addition, TEP is active in working to advance non-discrimination and partner benefits measures in East, West, and Middle Tennessee. TEP also provides educational programming throughout.
• After January 1, volunteers will be needed to help with the 7th Tennessee Equality Project Gumbo Contest presented by Hilton Memphis on Sunday, February 19, 2017. The TEP’s annual Mardi Gras celebration brings together teams from the Western, Middle and Eastern United States to compete for the best gumbo in Memphis. Gumbo contestants will be awarded prizes by an appointed panel of judges and by individual tasters like you in the People’s Choice competition. Information on this event is at facebook.com/events/1833144490247967/.
• Another important volunteer opportunity with TEP will be to participate in one of three Advancing Equality Days on the Hill. The first is Feb. 7, 2017, and also, March 7, and April 4 at the Tennessee Capitol building. These are opportunities for people around the state to come to Nashville and speak with their state legislators about bills of concern like the new and expanded Counseling Discrimination bill. LATINO MEMPHIS
You don’t have to speak Spanish! — but if you do, that’s great! If you don’t speak Spanish, don’t worry. We can facilitate a volunteer opportunity that fits your talents. There are plenty of opportunities: from helping around the office, to assisting during special events (e.g., dental clinics, tax advice, computer education). There’s always something different going on. You can get volunteer credits for college, too. Age requirements depend on the volunteer activity. Just ask when you are ready to choose your opportunity.
